OHHH NO SOMEONE GOT A TRADITIONAL TATTOO LETS ACCUSE THEM OF BEING RACIST AND RUIN THEIR LIVES GOOD IDEA
If people don’t want their lives ruined, they shouldn’t do racist things in the first place.
You can respect the art of traditional tattoos while still calling out shit like this. It’s 2012, time for this tradition to die.
And as we know, complaints by marginalized people made on Tumblr are the leading cause of death among cis straight white people.
Yeah, you go to a job interview, and they look over your application “all seems good, but let’s check tumblr… oh, someone accused you of cultural appropriation once! You will never work in this city again!”
fuck all of you. this is my sister and it’s a fucking tattoo. it’s tagged as urban outfitters because that’s where the dress is from. where you got racist from, I have no idea. but she’s beautiful and so is her tattoo so take your ridiculous assumptions and hateful comments and shove it up your self-righteous ass.
Before you toss around accusations of assumption, maybe you should consider the implications of presumption?
The tattoo is a fucking disgrace. Full stop. The person it’s scratched on could be a goddamn saint who heals kittens in their spare time, but they’d still have a goddamn caricature on their goddamn shoulder, and that goddamn caricature is one that flattens an entire group of diverse people into something simple and trite for your edification.
Seems pretty fucking presumptuous to me.
Oh, the art of it all. What-the-fuck-ever.
You want to accuse people of self-righteousness? Cool. You can sit upon your lofty tower of privilege and appeal to some nebulous conception of civility when you, and your sister, and all you other schmucks, are so fucking smugly self-assured that you fail to realize that thistattoo and the tradition of American Romanticism from which it came, is based on some seriously racist colonial essentialisms. You know, Tiger Lily and other Indian Princesses, Noble Savages like Winnetou and Chinchagook, and all those other bogus ideas that were ridden by US continental imperialists like fucking hobby horses.
and some shithead calls this a traditional tattoo?
Yeah, you better fucking believe it’s traditional, but it ain’t any one of ours. Shitting on and mocking Native people has always been a white American tradition, and it’s been going on for so fucking long that you guys think it’s perfectly cool and normal to subvert and warp images of the American Indian to serve and support you.
Ain’t nothing like assuming the trappings of indigeneity to serve bullshit claims of settler nativism, yeah?
Because you guys love our stuff, but you couldn’t give less of a shit about the people who created and use it.
“But oh gosh those headdresses are just like, so pretty!”
I hope she enjoys her dumb fucking tattoo.
voldem0rt, i just wanna say, from me to you, i know your sister’s tattoo serves a purpose. and it’s not just to assert her power over native people, but to warn all indigenous folks that actually have the misfortune to lay eyes on her that she is a goddamn racist.
a hateful, soulless, willfully ignorant white supremacist waste of time and space who will even go so far as to brand her SKIN with proof of just how subhuman she believes indigenous people to be. cuz that’s the fuck of it, you wouldn’t get a goddamn cartoon stereotype, built off of inaccurate white racist perceptions of an entire group of people in ink in the dermis layer of your skin if you actually, you know, considered them to be people. so i guess it’s a good thing we indians are not real, living, struggling people! and our way of life hasn’t been under constant attack for hundreds of years! our children, our land, our traditions, they’re not still being taken from us to-fucking-day, not 1492, but TODAY. Because it’s not like we are, overwhelmingly, not even see as HUMAN by the majority of people on this island.
man, don’t even get me STARTED on the fact that it only JUST became possible last year for tribes to prosecute crimes committed by non-members to try to combat the EPIDEMICRAPE of indigenous tribe members, overwhelmingly perpetrated by off-rez attackers. or that, even still, with this shiny new law, the max sentence that tribes can hope to give out, regardless of the crime, is 3 years. did you know the national off-rez average sentence for rape in the US is 11.8 years, with only 5.4 on average served? i wonder how that math is gonna break down when the highest sentence a tribal court of law can hope to hand out is just three years, and that’s before you factor in the general lack of state and federal cooperation, or the monetary means to prosecute that so many tribal courts lack.
but hey, what do you care about that, right? it’s not your sister’s tattoo is part of a long legacy of fetishizing and caricaturizing native women that directly contributes to their being perceived as subhuman sexual objects and thus much more likely to be victims of rape in their life time. Over two and a half times more likely, actually.
those things are completely unconnected and how dare anyone imply that your sister’s whimsical little hipster tattoo could actually cause real life fucking harm to native people? Could be part of a larger whole of disregarding native identity that has actual, real world consequences, you little piece of shit.
that would require you and your sister swallowing the bitter fucking pill that natives are human fucking beings, and the both of you clearly aren’t ready for such a big, scary step.
